Protect our Trees!

Some City Councils are streets ahead with their New Tree Planting-Policies. The Town of Victoria Park is one of these councils. The Town of Victoria Park requires that with every house that gets built, a suitable tree needs to be planted on that property as well. This devotion to the future of our Urban Forest Canopy is admirable, even BRILLIANT.

Some other Councils are lagging behind. Most will have some sort of policy about street trees and a policy for the protection of trees on development sites; but some don’t seem to have any policies at all.

Have a look at this picture:

According to Australian Standards, the trees on this construction site should have fences around them to protect them from damage during the demolition and construction process; however, the un-named City Council involved in this picture has no policies and procedures in place to ensure that the Australian Standards (AS4970-2009) for Tree Protection on Development Sites are met.

Some Councils still have a long way to go to convince us of their dedication and due diligence to the future of the Urban Forest.
